A New York Story

When I was 19 years old, I left the small town (pop. 3,000) I grew up in and moved to the big city. A lot of small town girls have done the same, and if they haven't, they have surely dreamed of it. In my case, the city was New York. After all, "If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere" - at least according to Liza Minnelli. Today I was checking out Homer's Odd Isn't He and came across this video of actor Griffin Dunne. You may not be familiar with him, but I remember him fondly from the 1985 film "After Hours". It was directed by Martin Scorsese, had a great ensemble cast and has become a bit of a cult classic. It is about a guy who is out late in NYC and can't seem to get himself home - loses his subway token, doesn't have cab fare, yadda yadda yadda. Before sunrise he manages to stumble upon all kinds of quacky, New York types in his quest to get himself home. It is one of my all time favorites and above all else, reminds me of my early days in New York. If any of you have an affinity for New York City, Mr. Dunn, or just following your dreams, you may appreciate this New York Story.

Wow, what a move, small town of 3000 to New York! Very brave for so young too! Thank you for your advice re my kitchen. As I have never built before, I never thought of the issue of smudges on a dark, shiny benchtop! I am getting a 2nd kitchen quote tomorrow so I will ask about a more matt finish. I am enjoying reading your blog very much! A-M xx

Well, this is wonderful bc I think it's quite rare to run across someone who *truly* appreciates After Hours, which has always been a favorite of mine. I think it's quite brilliant - and that it features Dunne's subtleties perfectly. :)

Vosges - thanks for visiting my blog. I do speak some French and Italian and see that you include those languages in your posts, but am not brave enough to correspond in anything but English. We Americans - what will you do with us! Thanks for all your comments - I'll visit again soon!

A-M,
The other week I had to contemplate what kind of a handle I wanted on my toilet (we had changed the sink fixture and wanted "to be matchy-matchy" as my daughters would accuse me of". I stood in the store for quite a while suffering over that decision. Can't imagine putting a whole house together!

Ann - finally, someone else who knows and loves this movie! Watching it now, it's funny to see all the scenes in Soho. Back then it was actually a half way affordable neighborhood. Now it's full of trendy restaurants and boutique shopping. All the old artists lofts are priced out of reach for any actual artist. Oh well - the city never sleeps!

Actually I moved away from pittsburgh to a small town in north central WV 10 years ago. I was tired of the neighbors playing football in my yard. And the pollution and the coke works across the river.

So here I am, out mostly in the middle of nowhere. I love the land, the hardest part has been the lack of good shopping!

Hi!
Thanks for visiting my blog. I've really enjoyed having a look around yours and will make it a point to come back. I too have a long-standing love affair with New York City and am a big fan of "After Hours."

I just love that movie. It's so true to real life :)

I couldn't get the movie to work. :( Anywho, I am not at all a young girl, but still have this dream...not sure it would be the same with a cranky husband and a demanding 2 and 1/2 year old.

Mrs. French - I've added a link to the video in case this one isn't opening for you.

Lydee - is that anywhere near Clarksburg or Sistersvill - my ex's family is originally from there.

Krissy & S. Hostess - who knew there were so many fans of "After Hours"! I should have a girl's night in with cocktails and screen it at my house!
Think you could all fly in for the
premiere?!

Hmmm. I thought I left a comment yesterday but don't see it so I'll give it another try. I think this movie sounds funny and want to see it. I moved from a town not as small as the one you moved from to a city not as big as your NYC. But it was so sun all the same!

Hey! Saw your comment on Dose of Design & wanted to suggest you check out Ike for those acrylic chairs for your dining table! I blogged about their new chair called Tobias & bought it the next day. I love it! Check it out!!

Marie - I've gotten several compliments about your blog just from people finding you from my comment box - I added a link to my sidebar. Hope that's okay?

Marie Louise said...

littlebyrd - you'll have to rent it - although I'm warning you - it's very 80s which can be shocking for someone who didn't come of age in that decade. Are you still in the big city or have you retreated to the country?

Marie Louise said...

"J" I saw your blog - thanks for the info - are you sure it was Dose of Design - thought it was another site? Anywho - I did see the Ikea chairs and have been staring at their photo trying to decide. Keeping my options open until I paint the room - then I'll make that executive decision! I'll let you know if I have any new design dilemmas!

Thanks Rebecca! I appreciate that. I have to start adding some of my favorite blogs as well. I've just been doing this about 3 weeks and haven't figured out how to do that yet. I think I just make a list when I add a page element? I'm not very computer savvy unfortunately :-(

What a wonderful video. I miss New York--wish I'd moved there when I was young. I love After Hours too--Terri Garr at her freakiest.

Hi, Thanks for visiting my blog!
I have read around a little in your blog, it's nice. About that 220 degree issue (was it 220? I'm used to Celsius so...). I wonder what the company says when you say that you are going to put that extra effort in your family/home/hobby or whatever, because there you lack one degree and at the company they lack several degrees so.....Hope to see you or hear from you again, have a nice weekend!

Hey Marie Louise,
The 80's is just fine by me. In fact, most of my favorite movies are from that era, Kramer vs Kramer, Heartburn, Ordinary People, the list goes on. Oh, I am still in the city! I love it too much to leave right now. Cheers!

I tagged you on my blog for a meme. Play along if you like :-)
