Is it possible that it's over?

(Essex Boat Club from Pettipaug - Summer Afternoon)
by Leif Nilsson

"And so the seasons went rolling on into summer, as one rambles into higher and higher grass" - Henry David Thoreau
I have always loved this quote. I think it captures the true essence of my favorite season - "summertime". Unfortunately, with school beginning this week for my girls, it is for all intents and purposes, over. Just a blur between my first roasted marshmallow on the 4th of July and the hot fudge sundae at the dairy bar last weekend. Replaced by 6am wake-up calls, homework and hectic schedules. Last weekend, knowing that the end was near, my husband and I took a drive down to Essex, Connecticut, to savor this old river town and share the last of our precious "summertime".

I'm not ready to let go of summer. It usually goes quickly, but this year it went unusually fast. Last night I posted our schedule for September on the dry-erase board that hangs on our fridge...each day is loaded!

I enjoyed your photos greatly. Essex is beautiful.

It did fly by. I took a walk this morning and felt the difference in the air. Your trip to Essex looks amazing! What a pretty place. Thanks for always sharing your pics - I take a mini-vacation whenever you post them!

Oh, goodness, I love Essex. Here's a fun trip for you -- on Monday nights they have a sea chantey performance/sing-a-long at the Griswold Inn (one of my favorite New England-y places.) It's terrific, but then, this comes from a woman who went to colonial camp five summers in a row. Serious.

Yes, it true. The leaves are already starting to turn orange. I'll miss summer but really will enjoy the coolness of fall.

Essex looks like a very peaceful place.

What a lovely outing. I totally relate to the back-to-school anguish. A week into it I'm getting back to my old lunch-packing form but I already miss the lazy lingering summer days. Lastly, I love Gwyneth. No bashing from me. Cheers.

I'll enjoy summer til the very last day: septmeber 21! Though I agree that all this back to school theme makes us forget we're still in Summer ..

Gorgeous pictures...makes me so happy summer is finally COMING, over here!! lol

(Re the mismatched clothespins...my inlaws, MIL, FIL, and SIL, just spent six weeks with us...EVERY.SINGLE.TIME I went out there, they had COMPLETELY mixed up the pins!! Tell me HOW you do that!! They are already paired!! You just clip each piece to the matched pair!! ARGH!!! lol)

muralimanohar - matching clothespins is practically an art form. Obviously your inlaws aren't as talented as you!
Six weeks! Must have been torturous for you!

Lol, yes..I have the patience of a saint. :p

Hi Marie Louise, thanks for your lovely comments. Your pictures are beautiful!! Essex is such a pretty place. Isn't it weird you are just ending summer and we are on the otherside of the world welcoming Spring! Our big school break is always over Dec/Jan so we are getting into the home stretch of the school year and looking forward to a lovely summer break. Amanda x
